The First Pact / Chapter 02

The Clause in the Ashes

Ava and Coco stay late in the Exchange archive. The smallest detail could undo the version everyone remembers.

Ava Cado and Coco Cash examine a fire-damaged document in the Exchange archive.
In the archive, the order of events matters.
Previously in The First Pact

An unsigned invitation has brought Banzo, Brocko and Burglar back to the Exchange. The old agreement refers to a missing Annex C. Ava and Coco are following the paper trail.

At eleven that night, Ava placed three things on the archive desk: the agreement, a notebook and a cup that Coco was firmly instructed not to balance on the agreement.

“It's an excellent cup,” he said.

“Then give it its own legal territory.”

The Exchange archive smelled of cedar and paper warmed by old lamps. Outside the curved windows, the harbour had become a scatter of violet lights. Coco opened the first ledger. Ava searched the boxes marked for the bridge closure.

Banzo's father had always said the blackout came first. After the lights failed, someone closed the east bridge. By morning, money intended for its repair had disappeared, and the accusations had travelled faster than the ferries.

Ava had written that account at the top of her page. Underneath, she had added one question: Who recorded it?

“Found a payment,” Coco said. “Joint account. Bridge repairs. No recipient on this copy.”

“So we know a payment was authorised.”

“Not where it ended up.”

“Good. Keep those sentences separate.”

A narrow document sleeve had slipped behind the final box. Its exposed edge was browned, as if someone had rescued it from a small fire and then stored it very badly. Ava eased the sheet onto the desk.

ANNEX C.

The lower corner was damaged, but the heading remained clear: temporary closure of the east footbridge. Beneath it were three signatures.

She recognised Banzo's father's hand first. Brocko's father's signature was broad and impatient. Burglar's father had used so much flourish that Coco leaned closer to see where it ended.

“All three?”

Ava pointed to a stamped time beside the signatures. 23:40.

Coco turned back through the ledger to the caretaker's incident record. The interruption to local power was entered at 23:50.

Ten minutes later.

For a moment, neither spoke. Ava could hear a loose window catch tapping against the frame.

“The bridge was ordered closed before the blackout,” Coco said.

“If these records are genuine, yes.”

“That's not how Banzo tells it.”

“That's why we check the records before we call him.”

They compared the paper register, the caretaker's duplicate and the numbering on the sleeve. The order belonged to the same night. Its stated reason was a structural warning, pending inspection.

Coco rubbed a thumb along the closed ledger. “So they knew something was wrong.”

“Enough to sign together. That doesn't tell us everything else they did.”

Ava made clean copies for all three families. She left the original beneath the lamp, well away from the cup. The page had not cleared anyone. It had done something more inconvenient: it had given every side a reason to listen.

Coco's phone lit up. A message from Burglar contained a photograph of another sheet.

“Interesting timing,” Coco murmured.

Ava read the line in the photograph.

REPAIR PAYMENT RETURNED.

Under it sat the reference of the same joint account.

She reached for a fresh page.
